Thoreau was educated at Harvard but chose the unpopular career of writer and poet to satisfy his soul’s urging. A force in the New England Transcendentalist movement, along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, he loved nature, freedom, and individuality. Thoreau is best known for his reflective memoir, Walden, about his experiment in living simply in a natural setting at Walden Pond.
